On January 25th, 44 members of the Philippine National Police force’s elite Special Action Force lost their lives while on a mission against a notorious terrorist bomb-maker. The nation was thrown into a terrible state of mourning and the hearts of my Filipino friends and family members were broken in anguish and grief over the horrible loss of life.
It’s times like these that make me feel a little lost.
There was indeed a death in the Filipino family that day and as a foreigner I feel helpless to offer anything meaningful to condole this, my adopted country.
Political and religious turmoil has flared with rhetoric being shouted from all sides. As a foreigner and as someone new to the culture, I cannot and should not offer anything in those arenas. And so I will not.
My place is to offer my deepest condolences to the families and to offer my heartfelt hope for an end to all violence and the beginning of healing.
